Who we are

The Friends of Rimkieta Foundation (in Spanish, “Fundación Amigos de Rimkieta” - FAR) was founded in autumn of 2004 with the aim of contributing to the economic and social development of the neighborhood. Together with Luis and Montse Riba, Juan Carlos Vázquez-Dodero, José Vidal, Mercè Casanovas, Fernando Infiesta and María Vázquez-Dodero set ourselves the exciting task of trying to make life easier for the 60,000 inhabitants of the Rimkieta neighborhood, which occupies some 40 square kilometers. We started out as Friends of Rimkieta Association and, in 2007, were constituted as a Foundation.

Our spirit of indefinite presence and total commitment to Rimkieta takes its form in the various activities and initiatives we develop aimed at covering basic necessities and improving the quality of life of Rimlieta's inhabitants.

The Friends of Rimkieta Foundation is managed by a group of business-people and professionals.

Board:

  • Juan Carlos Vázquez-Dodero, President, professor at IESE
  • Mercè Casanovas, member, speech therapist
  • Sergi Leiva, member, business executive
  • Fernando Infiesta, member, business executive
  • Jorge Muro, member, business executive
  • Carmen Silla, member, on-line marketing director
  • Maria Vázquez-Dodero, the foundation's manager in Burkina Faso (dodero@gmail.com)
  • Honorary member: José Vidal Royo, entrepreneur

Our mission

The Friends of Rimkieta Foundation (FAR)'s mission is to achieve the best possible living conditions in the neighbourhood of Rimkieta (a suburb of Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou) and its surrounding areas, principally for its women and children, and especially in relation to their education, nutrition, health, and the social and professional promotion of the women.

Our philosophy of action is completely business-minded to implement solutions in accordance with the area’s social, cultural and environmental realities.

Principles of Conduct

Everyone who forms part of the Foundation shares a philosophy and values that determine our ‘modus operandi’ and reflect FAR’s essence. FAR's activities are governed by the following principles, which are faithfully fulfilled:

“A euro here, a euro in Burkina”

Each euro donated is used entirely for the projects carried out in Rimkieta. This is possible due to the fact that all institutional and infrastructure expenses are fully assumed by the Foundation's patrons and by donations specifically for this purpose. Further, we maintain a patrimonial fund in order to guarantee this principle’s sustainability.

“To keep up more than to take up, permanent commitment”

FAR hopes to remain permanently in the neighbourhood of Rimkieta and its surroundings.  The area is so large, so populated and so extremely poor so as to make it impossible to guess when it might be considered “developed.” Our maxim is “keep on.”

“We control the results”

FAR has a rigorous work method:

      - Every project is selected by the Board.

      - The annual budget is revised and approved every three months by the Board.

      - The projects report information to Spain weekly, and budgetary control is monthly.

      - The manager lives in Ouagadougou and the Board members travel to Burkina Faso several times a year to oversee the projects and the institutional relations.

“We want to be a simple organization”

Focused on its own mission, oriented towards each individual, and tightly controlled, with an agile decision-making system within direct management and controlled by its own Board.

“Local team”

FAR aims to provide employment and develop its employees in Rimkieta and its surrounding area. Thus we hire almost exclusively local people, who are managed with some support from headquarters.

“Prompt and truthful accountability”

FAR regularly reports on its projects' progress to Friends, Sponsors and Patrons. Specifically, management updates a blog regularly, reports biannually to each sponsor, and calls a yearly general meeting of patrons and collaborators in order to present the previous year’s financial statement and audit, and the plan and budget for the coming year.

FAR’s accounts are audited since its foundation and it complies rigorously with the demands of both, Spanish and Burkinabe Public Administrations.

FAR has been submitted, during 2009 to 2016 financial years, to the "Fundación Lealtad’s" reviews, complying at that time, with its sub-principles of "Transparency and Good Practices". Currently, FAR is not analyzed by Fundación Lealtad.

“We look for professional and committed volunteers”

The salaried infrastructure of FAR must be minimal.  We encourage and accept lasting professional help in all necessary areas, always within the scope of clear and concrete objectives overseen by management.

The Team

Almost the entire FAR team in Rimkieta is burkinabé. FAR constantly aims to train and better its employees, without whose work and dedication, FAR would not be possible.
